Hi Sue,
I am researching the Swain family line in Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee and wondered if there might be a connection. I have two brothers who were both born in Virginia and whose parents were born in Virginia. The brothers are Jesse Swain b.abt 1790 and Josiah, b. 1804 or 05. They are both found in the 1840 census in Kentucky, Mercer County. Josiah moved to Tennessee, Franklin County in 1850. He is married to Mary James in Kentucky and they had nine girls, no boys, Louisa, Jane, Mollie, Amanda (Nannie) Sidney, Sara, Martha, Idella, and Alice. In 1870 census for Franklin County TN, a William Swain, 18 yrs old is living in the Josiah Swain household. Later he married Josiah's youngest daughter, Alice, and they moved to Ft. Worth. They had two children, Beulah, and David Valentine Swain. I am wondering if David Valentine is a family name and a clue to this family's ancestral heritage.
Since Jesse Swain is listed as the father of William Swain on William's Texas death certificate and I find William Swain in the houselhold of Jesse Swain in 1860 in Logan County, Ky, I am thinking that William and Alice are cousins and that William is the great nephew of my Josiah Swain.
I am hoping to find the parents, both born Virginia acording to census information, of the two brothers, Jesse and Josiah and possibly connect them to the Nantucket Swains.
I have just begun this phase of my research and hopefully will get some clues from other listers.
