Swain Research Sources

This posting was prompted by several recent inquiries from "show me" researchers concerning the most accurate, authoritative and reliable published works on the Richard Swain family. Those sources are; (1) The History of Nantucket by Alexander Starbuck; (2) The New England Historical and Genealogical Register; (3) Vital Records of Nantucket to 1850; (4) History of Hampton, N.H. by Joseph Dow; (5) History of Exeter by Charles H. Bell; (6) New Hampshire Residents 1633-1699 by Jay Mack Holbrook; (7) Vital Records of Hampton, N.H., Volumes 1 and 2 by George Freeman Sanborn, Jr. and Melinde Lutz Sanborn; (8) Nantucket, The Far-Away Island by William O Stevens, Published April 1936 and; (9) Nantucket, The Life of an Island by Edwin P. Hoyt, Published 1978. Some modern day authors have extracted information from some of these published sources and included the extracts in their own work thereby misleading some researchers to believe their work is an authenic source when in fact they have perpetuated known inaccuracies such as those published by persons like James Savage.
