Thanks Donna and Nancy. For the benefit of others visiting this forum, the following are other children of Walter and Mildred (Swain) Dowdy.

From the 1850 census: John P. (4), Ann M. (2) and Martha J (1)
From the 1860 census: Mildred is not listed, John (14), A.M. (12), Martha J (10), Wm(8)
P.F. (6), and E J. (4). Wm is the son of particular interest to me as I think he is my ggfather.
My William Henry Dowdy was born 12/24/1853, which would actually make him 7 when the census was taken. I am willing to accept that the census may have been off a year in the ages. A reference from "Bedford Co., VA Birth Records 1853-1856" shows a Parry Franklin (P.F. on the census) Dowdy, b. 3/22/53 to Walter B Dowdy and Mildred L. Dowdy. That same reference shows an Abbey Dowdy born 4/14/1855 to Walter B and Mildred T. Dowdy, but I don’t see her listed on the 1860 census. Do you know if Mildred died between 1855 and 1860? If so any details?

My only link to this Dowdy family is that they have a William listed on the census that is about the same age as the one I am researching. Through my other research I am able to determine that my William is from Bedford and is close to the Overstreet family. He married Susan Victoria Morgan, who had previously married an Overstreet. At this point I still have to convince myself that I have attached myself to the correct Dowdy/Swain family. Thanks a lot for your help.

John Dowdie
