Hello, Karen. We were aware that there was a memorial of some sort there originally but because of the narrowness of the road in the gorge were unable stop the car and get out to view it. This was made mush easier once the the road was widened and the larger memorial was erected. I did take take some photos of it because it was rather splendid. I am so pleased you contacted me. I always thought that Paul Swank was a forgotten one and had no family although the size of the new memorial showed that he was someone of some importance at the time. We did spend some time trying to find out from local people and the museum in Quillan as to who he was but nobody could tell us. There are several memnorials raised to members of the Resistance (Marquis) in that area but his is the only American one.

Unfortunately my husband died last year and he will never know that I have finally solved the riddle of Paul Swank but I will tell our daughters. Our house in France is being sold at the moment so it is unliklely that I will ever visit Paul Swanks memorial again. But if you have more information at soem point I would love to hear from you again.
