The Swart family members who are descended from the Dutch immigrant Teunis Corneliszen Swart are usually particular about getting it right. The 'Swartz' spelling is usually imposed on us by clerks, census takers or vital statistics recorders, among others. That is not to say that there are no Swarts' or Swartzes among us, but there are relatively few. There is some correlation with when the family left the areas of Dutch population concentration and resided among the English speakers, who delighted in adding a terminal 's'.
The Swart brothers who fled Schenectady after the massacre and settled in Esopus/Kingston, and whose descendants diffused from there to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kansas and so on are a little more likely to have variant spellings than the Mohawk Swarts, who stayed close to the home territories until after the Revolution - and many of whom are still there.
