Hello Gayle,
Sorry to take seven years to get back to you on John Marion Sweatt. He died in 1929 in Danville VA and is buried in the Schoolfield cemetery there. He had three separate families. By his first wife Lilah Griffith or Griffin, he had my grandfather Raymond Roy Sweatt. His wife Lelah, died in child birth and Raymond was raised in a foster home. Raymond married Maggie Garrison in Greenville county. He died at an ealy age approx. a mounth after my father Raymond J. Sweatt was born. John Marion next married in GA and had a son he named John Marion Sweatt, Jr. This John Jr. was still alive some ten to fifteen years ago in GA. John Marion Sr. next married a belva Coonts in SC or VA and had several children by her including another John Marion Sweatt, Jr, but he died as a child.
If you are not already aware, Thomas Elijah Sweatt's father was Richard Sweatt and appears as Richard Sweet in the 1850 White county TN census. Thomas appears as 2 yrs old and the only child born in TN. In 1840, a Richard appears in fairfield, SC with children of the approximate age as Thomas older siblings.
In the 1850 Tn census Richard appears as age 50. below that is Elizabeth age 22. She is either his daughter or his seecond wife. He has a son Daniel, age 5, who I believe is the Daniel appearing in Anderson County in 1880 at age 33.
Please let me know if you recieve this information after so many years. You can email me at
