Good point.I'd guess that "N. Ireland" in the 1930 US Census would refer to the statelet of Northern Ireland that only came into being in 1922.Before that time, there was only "Ireland" as the whole island was united.There is still confusion about what to call the counties.For example, "Ulster" is nine counties, but "Northern Ireland" is 6 counties, and Donegal is not in "Northern Ireland" even though it is the most northerly county in the Island. Sometimes you can get away with saying "The North of Ireland" and mean by that some vague region north of Dublin.
