Thomas Sweeney - land steward

My ancestor, Patrick Sweeney was born around 1827 in Ireland. His father was named Thomas Sweeney and is listed on Patrick's marriage certificate as a Land Steward. Family lore is that they lived outside of Dublin Ireland. I'd like to know what a Land Steward is and if there is any record of a Thomas Sweeney as a land steward in the 1820's - 1840's in Ireland.
