I have never heard the story that Hugh Gwynn received his island as a gift from Powhatan, but I do know that his patent for land was granted by an order of the court in 1635 and it is the earliest grant to be found for Gloucester/Mathews Co.
Maybe they connect to you:

These Sykes migrated to Isle of Wight Co., VA
Andrew (son of Andrew) married Chloe Hough.Chloe is the daughter of James Hough and Mary Powell. They resided on the Blackwater (which is the Southampton Co. line)Most of the families they continued to intermarry with are from York Co and Gloucester and probably King and Queen.
The Sykes family and the Powell family farms in Southampton were in very close proximity to each other according to a Civil War Map I have seen.
