From what my great grandfather told me, originally the Name was Taaffe. But because of family disagreements about religion(one side Catholic, the other Atheist) the family broke into different sects and eventually came to change there name completely because they didn't want to have an association with each other, understandably. He himself was an Atheist which would have been the Taaffe side and the Catholic would have been Taft.
