Hiya Ted,
I know you said that you were going to forward the previous information I posted on this site to your father-in-law, but I have to strike while the iron is hot with this extra information because I'm going back to college tomorrow and probably won't have the time to surf or read (off course) for a while....
Went into The National Library yesterday and browsed through that book - the Memoirs.
Well, I'm all "Taaffed out" now!
Elizabeth Taaffe (daughter of Francis, who was son of William who was 4th son of the 1st Viscount Taaffe) married Hiberus O'Hara in 1686. They lived at the Castle of Ballyhara in County Sligo. (I should also add that I know that the main O'Hara branch at one time was faced with losing its name because they had no sons, so the daughter was married to a "Cooper" who was made to change his name to O'Hara thus ensuring that the family name continued.I mention this because it could have happened the "other way around" as well)...
I'm inclined to think that this marriage created a "kinship" between the O'Hara family (equally powerful in the County) and the Taaffes and that they continued to interconnect and that another marriage took place between a Bohemian Taaffe and a Sligo O'Hara and they subsequently moved from Bohemia to Denmark (though from reading the Memoirs, it's obvious that for monied/titled people who travelled and toured around a lot, being born in a place didn't necessarily mean that one lived there). Many "Danish" titled people were in fact Germanic in origin (in the same way as titled people in Ireland were Anglo in origin).
All of this has made me so sad about the demise of the Louth Taaffes. And what happened to all the papers, all the photographs....
When we visited Randall Taaffe in Smarmore, himself and his wife were quite elderly and their only child (a daughther) was married and lived in Canada. The Castle was subsequently sold and I heard that it was turned into a "Leisure Centre" (ugh, ugh, ugh).
Anyway, I'm galvanised now to try and follow up on the paper chase when my next college break comes round...
I'll keep you posted about that.
Rhoda.
Oh, I also emailed one of the O'Hara branches in Sligo (used to live there) to ask about the Hiberus and other possible Taaffe links...
