Hi, I was wondering if any of you know exactly when Tablertown got the official name of "Kilvert"? I read on some web sites that oral history has it that the town of Kilvert, Ohio is named after a former slaveowner, but I can't find any evidence for that so I'm thinking that there must be some other explanation. Knowing the exact date when "Kilvert" starts appearing on various documents would be a great help. Also, for you folks who know Ohio geography and prehistory. Is the town of Kilvert anywhere near the Kilvert Burial Mound which is an undisturbed mound created by the ancient Moundbuilders of Ohio? FYI - The reason that I'm sceptical about the slaveowner story is that I just can't find any Kilverts who lived in slaveholding states or that were wealthy enough to own any slaves (not that I haven't benn looking hard for a couple of years). Over on the Kilvert surname forum we've been tracking down the Kilverts in the US. (Not a common name so not many of them, and mostly in New England) We've only come up with 2 brothers (Charles A and Samuel W Kilvert) who got anywhere near Ohio before the Civil War. (They show up in Chillicothe, Ohio as clerks in the 1860 census). Charles, the older brother, fought on the union side in the Civil War (and probably died in Chillicothe from war wounds). Samuel stayed long enough to marry Elizabeth Dun who had grown up in Ohio and whose father was anti-slavery. Thanks for your help! Notify Administrator about this message?
