When I visited my namesake village of Tackley, Oxfordshire UK, I spoke with the village Historian at length, who provided the following facts.Seems that the original inhabitants of Tackley were French Heugonots who fled France as a result of religious persecution. They were primarily upholsterers by trade...thus the "Tack" portion of the village name.A "lea" is a field used for grazing sheep, thus the "ley" portion of the village name - "Tackley".
"Tackley" is the anglicized spelling of the original French "Taiclet".
There had never been a resident of Tackley with the name Tackley. (I was the 1st ever known to visit, I was told).
It was common practice for village residents to take on the village name as their surname when relocating...thus John, from Tackley, became known simply as John Tackley.
How do these facts bear on the Tackley family name?
Were Tackley's French or English?(I was not able to trace my ancestry to former residents of this village).
BTW, my father was LeRoy Clyde Tackley, born Syracuse NY 1912, died 1991.My Mother was Bernice Marie LaTray, born Moravia NY 1910, died 1997.
