Louise, I just saw your post. We are related through James Dexter Tanner. However, he was born in Ohio in 1848. His father is James H. (possibly Harlan) Tanner who was born in Duchess County, NY in 1810, and this is where I have been stuck. I have not been able to find out who James H. Tanner's parents were. I do have the Obituary (newspaper clipping) of James H. Tanner. It says that he was born in Duchess County, NY on August 21, 1810. At age 12, he worked in a Carden mill turning lathe. At 16, he moved to Tarlon Town, NY (I think this is supposed to be Taylor). He and his father built a water saw mill and when not sawing, they made furniture. (My grandfather, Carlin James Tanner also built furniture from wood.) They moved to Cincinnatus, NY, bought 20 acres, cleared the land and worked at the Carpenter trade. Here, he married, Lucy Mudge on July 26, 1832. At the age of 26, he became a Baptist and remained so until he died. He sold the farm and moved to Huron County, OH, then Wyandotte County, OH and Wood County, OH. He lived there for 14 years on a farm of 35 acres. He sold this property and moved to Amboy, Hillsdale County, MI. He bought 81-1/2 acres of land. He was the father of 6 children, 2 girls and 4 boys. Only 2 boys survived him. James H. Tanner died on April 8, 1887 aged 76 years, 7 months and 17 days. I have pictures of James Dexter Tanner and Harriett Elliott Tanner and Lucy Tanner. They were sent to me by a cousin. Here's hoping that you respond. Carolyn - grandmacc3@aol.com Notify Administrator about this message?
