Help! Virginia Tapleys 1800
Posted by: John Abernathy Smith Date: February 09, 2002 at 05:53:39

I am trying to identify Betsy Tapley, who was married to Liles Abernathy (17??-1814) when he died in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. His will guaranteed to her the property she had inherited from John Tapley, but another will in Brunswick County suggests she was a daughter of Hosea Tapley. Yet another document witnessed by both Hosea and John Tapley suggests that they were living along the Nottoway River around 1775--probably in Dinwiddie County although the deed involved property in Brunswick. Since there does not seem to be a marriage record for Liles and Betsy, I infer they were married in burned-out Dinwiddie sometime between 1790 and 1805. I do not know what happened to Betsy after her husband's death. She does not seem to have died in Mecklenburg, but she probably left the area before 1828. Can any Tapley researchers help me out.
