Dear David,
There certainly are Tapleys from Devon. I have Mary tapley married Gregory Hawson in 1787 in St. Petrock, Dartmouth , Devon. The Hawsons came to Australia via New Foundland, Canada. As there was or is Tapleys in the same country town as Hawsons from 1839, I would guess they were related. There is also a farming district here which is now not farming , known as Tapleys Hill ( hence Tapleys Hill Road), no part of suburbia. I would hazard a guess that the Tapleys arrived on the Hawsons ship Abeona.
Hope you can link our trees.
Marie
