Smuggling

I recently found an interesting web-site devoted to smuggling in Kent. It has a reference to a Robert Tapley who owned a cutter that was involved in smuggling in 1781.

It has been suggested that Thomas TAPLEY born 22 Jun 1789 in Folkestone and married to Mary Morford had to live in Holland for 19 years to avoid being prosecuted for smuggling. He briefly returned to England in 1837 and emigrated to Australia the following year.
