Ralph, could you send me the information you have on Tarpys around 1820-50. I saw you had ancestors in Hartshead, Yorkshire, which is very near Huddersfield.
I have a bit of a brick wall with my ancestors Sarah Tarp(e)y (b. 1845) and Mary Tarp(e)y (b. ~1825). Sarah was illegitimate, but gave her father's name as Edward Tarpy at her marriage - possibly this was fictitious. To add to the confusion, she was wrongly registered at birth as TARP! She was born in Huddersfield in 1845, and m. Peter Galvin in 1864.
Mary Tarpy, her mother, was born in Ireland (according to census returns) in about 1825. I have no idea about her movements before 1845. She does not seem to have been in Huddersfield in 1841. She married a Lewis Landy in 1852 and was in Huddersfield with him until 1861, but does not appear in the 1871 census.
These are the only Tarp(e)ys in Huddersfield in 1851. But I suspect there are relatives nearby - who would have sent a 17 year old girl across from Ireland on her own? And Hartshead is the nearest I've found any Tarpys yet.
Would love more info, but thanks for the Hartshead lead anyway!
