Judi,
Take your pick on the spelling. In southwest Va, Nickolas Darter(son of Johann) changed the name to Tarter.
Also, Johann had 3 wives-Maria Kurtz, Anna Margretha Korstin, and Dorothea Eberhardt.
Nickolas, Jacob, and Alexander by Maria; Balzar and Johannes by Anna Margretha; and Andreas(Andrew), Margaretha, Johan, Peter and Hannikel by Dorothea.
I have Johann born 1720 in Laubach, Germany according to the Darter/Tarter book, pg 4.
