Thanks for the information. Here is what I have found.

Merrill Tarter was supposedly twin of Terrill, though I've been unable to find information on Terrill, unless he went by Terry.
At there is documentation that Merrill Tarter killed a man on election day by slitting his throat - this was, I believe, the first election after the Civil war ended, there were about 20 such disagreements at the polls in Kentucky alone, where tempers ran hot.

I actually met my Great Aunt Hettie, when I was 19 and first researching my family history. I've long forgotten what I learned, and lost any documentation, but I recall her dropping to a whisper several times as she talked to my grandmother... scandal about someone being part "Indian," apparently.

Merrill Tarter married Nancy Stanton in 1868 and he died on 13 Dec 1903 in Kentucky, and is buried in Union Cemetery, Russell County, Kentucky. He does not appear in Civil War rolls, however, numerous Tarters from Pulaski/Russellville are listed in Confederate Army.

What I have on him, and the family is here.
I hope this is helpful.
