There are two Tarter books. "The Kentucky Tarters" by Elmerlee Tarter Oakley is full of unsupported assertions and lacks any sort of documentation. It's a typical example of list collecting passing for research. While it doubtless contains useful information, I have found numerous obvious mistakes, and therefore consider it a secondary source.

"The Darter-Tarter Family" by Oscar H. Darter, is much more well documented, but only touches on the Kentucky Tarter family at a couple of points.
