UPDATE:Harmon Tedder's Father is Benjamin Tudor, Sr
In a past post, I stated that I had found the father of Harmon Tedder to my satisfaction.Since then there have been great, telling results from updates of DNA.Since there is no paperwork to firmly document Harmon’s father, I used the best evidence I could find.In my previous input I used four pieces of information to arrive at the conclusion that Harmon’s father was Benjamin Tudor.
First, closeness in birth dates of Benjamin’s youngest known son, as determined by Tudor researchers, and Harmon.Benjamin’s youngest, James, was born about 1760; Harmon’s birth date would be around 1762.Second, location.Benjamin’s brother John bought 160 acres on the East side of Fishing Creek.Harmon had to live near John Tudor’s property as from what I can find he had children born near Fishing Creek. Also census date lists Harmon with 150 acres in the Epping Forest District; Epping Forest adjoins Fishing Creek.Third, association. In the 1800 census there were four Tedders who I believe are all related in the Hillsboro District of Chatham County.Harmon Tedder is listed and also a William Tedder.William I believe is Harmon’s brother based on a perfect 37 DNA match between a William descendant and a Harmon descendant. This William has to be the William who was the father of Littleton and Benjamin W as the 1800 census lists two boys up to ten year’s old and William’s age corresponds with the 1830 Laurens, GA, census when he is in the household of his son Benjamin W.There is also a John Tedder who when he was allocated over four-hundred acres by the state was listed as John Tudor.Tudor researchers believe this John was also a son of Benjamin Sr.This John could not be the son of Henry Tudor.Henry’s John was born around 1760 and would be around forty years old in 1800, where the John in the Hillsboro census was 45+.In addition it is not likely the state would allocate over four-hundred acres to a nineteen year old. There is also a James W Tedder in the Hillsboro 1800 census.Where did he come from? The evidence is overwhelming that his father was John Tedder.Look at the 1790 Chatham Census and you find a son listed as 0 to 16 in John’s household; then look at the 1800 census and you find that James W is 16 to 26 and there is no son of that age in John’s household.James W married and established his own household near his father.
Fourth, I based my conclusion on DNA.Both closeness of markers and the fact that there was a mutation at marker 18 for both the Harmon descendant and the John Tudor descendant.Henry Tudor descendants were also close in DNA markers but at 67 markers this close association vanishes.I updated to the 67 marker test and also the descendant of John Tudor did also.We are only off two genetic distances at 67 markers. The two genetic distances occurred between 13 and 25 markers but for the next 42 markers we match perfectly.Differences in genetic distances occur most often at the lower markers and less often at the higher markers. The two genetic distances at 67 markers would, on their own, approach a 90 percent confidence that both Harmon and John Tudor descendants match and that Both are descended from John Tedder. In addition, there is an additional mutation at marker 30 between the Harmon and John Tudor descendant.I don’t know how, in the absence of paperwork, I can get any closer to firmly proving that Harmon is descended from Benjamin Tudor, Sr.
DNA results would also indicate that John Tedder and Henry Tudor could have been brothers or at the most cousins, both by DNA and by association. The Henry descendant at the 67 DNA marker test is off 5 genetic distances. In addition, I found that on May 30, 1762, both Henry and Benjamin Tudor witnessed the will of William Watkins of Sussex County and Parish of Albemarle. Then in 1775 Benjamin along with his wife Mary, sell land in Sussex County, VA, but he states he is from Granville, NC.
