Melissa,
James "Striker" Tennison, born 185718601862 in Newton Co.AR. was son of Allen Tennison and Rachel Estep.
He married Sarah Melvina Pearce Armstrong on 18 May 1884 in Newton Co.AR. She was daughter of Benjamin and Jane Pearce and had married (1) Henry Clingmon Armstrong on 4 Jan 1877 (they were divorced).H C Armstrong was son of Meredith Armstrong.
H C Armstrong later married Mary J Bolin in 1882. Mary J. was daughter of Elizabeth "Betsy" Nichols Bolin who was sister to our third great-grandmother Tibitha Nichols Ricketts.
James Striker Tennison killed a man with a knife and did
prison time. He died ca 1931 and is buried in Smith Cemetery, Newton Co.AR.
The story told to me by an oldtimer was that this man was out in the field plowing (John Cross?) and Jim Tennison came up to him and said John owed him 25cents. The man said he would pay him. Striker took out his knife and slit John's throat and there was blood all over the place and even all over the horse or mule John was using to plow with.
This happened about 1896. Anyway, Jim Striker Tennison did prison time so he is probably on the 1900 census in an Arkansas prison. Gruesome story.
James and Sarah Melvina Tennison's children:
1.Becka Jane, born April 1885 (don't know what happened to her)
2.Mathew Tennison, born Jan 1887, who married Gertrude McCurley in 1911 in Newton Co.AR.
(there were several Mathew Tennisons living in Newton Co. AR.He may have married more times).
3.Roma Tennison, born June 1890. She married John H. Harvey in 1907 in Newton Co.AR.
4.James Will Tennison, born April 1892. He married (1) Mary Lane Morrison in 1909. He married (2) Vesta Etta Smith in 1918. Mary Lane Morrison Tennison later married Barney Bass.
While Jim Striker Tennison was in prison, wife Sarah Melvina had a daughter Fannie Leoma Smith. Fannie's Dad was our great-great grandfather Henry W Smith.
Striker told his wife to do something with the little girl, so she was taken to Henry Smith'shouse.
Henry's wife Barbara Allen Pierce House Smith took the little girl, Fannie, and raised her as one of her own. This Fannie Smith later married Willis T. Peoples. Fannie died in Tracy, California. Have a photo of her in the "John Thomas Peoples Story" on my website.
