Terhune - Compton Connection

I am researching my wife's great-grandfather Ezekiel Compton. Ezekiel was born about 1838 in what is now southern Somerset or northern Mercer County in New Jersey. Apparently his parents died in the 1840's. In the 1850 Census he is enumerated (as "Zekiel Cumtain", age 11) with the family of John and Mary Terhune of Hopewell Township, Mercer County. Because he is living with Terhunes at such a young age, it seems posssible that there could have been a connection between the two families. Does anyone have any information regarding a link between the New Jersey Terhunes and the Compton family? Ezekiel's father may have been Barnard Compton.
