What a tragic story! I feel sorry for anyone who was prompted to such a rush. The whole suit was a scam. If he died en route, all the worse.

More likely, the story has grown through the years.
There was a series of wills and deeds that led to the suit and the purported lease in question was only one of a number of documents supporting the Sulpicians and the bank. Reality is, the land is theirs in perpetuity and the descendents will never receive any remuneration of any kind. And with over 1,500,000 known descendents, the amount any individual would receive is negligible.
