Hey Sara, I've got great empathy for balmy downtown beautiful downtown Chicago has almost three feet of snow and counting!

[Jerry, if you read this, we'd love to spend the winters transcribing at YOUR PLACE!]

I wouldn't want to get all of the files. Apparently there are over 30 boxes. Under the equiv. of the Freedom of Information Act, however, we can request a "class" of records from the file. So we just want the proof of eligibility that everyone had to file, consisting of an affidavit that they were a legal heir and documenting their parentage back to Urbain and Marie. The good part is that it not only included the direct line, but also asked for info on who the person's siblings were. And if one was descended in more than one way, that may also be documented.

We don't know exactly what will be available, however, until the boxes are brought out of storage. The real hope is that they find an index of each claimant and that the files are still in good order after years of people going through them. One report was that there were many thousands of people documented in those files.

Since we haven't had any luck tracking down the attorney records, this is the best we may ever do in documenting everyone. Until we know how many people would be willing to help, though, it may not even be feasible to pursue. I like Richard's idea of scanning them in. Maybe we could even find one of the Rootsweb sites or to host it. What do you guys think?
