Bon jour Diane,

I am afraid that Urbain Tessier-Lavigne was not a French nobleman. Unlike the British Isles, there were very few French families who possessed a "family crest". Instead, the families fought under the banner of the duchies. So there is no family crest for this line. He would have the colours of his home, Anjou. In fact, there was a lawsuit over the Anjou heraldry in the late 1980s. You can read more about it (and most is in French, so it should be easier for you) at http://www.heraldica.org/topics/france/proces2.htm

Here's the gist of the suit:

In 1987, Henri d'Orléans, comte de Clermont, sued Alphonse de Bourbon Dampierre, duc d'Anjou, and asked the court to prevent him from using the title of duc d'Anjou and the plain arms of France, and to fine him 50 000F (about $8,000) per violation. In 1988, Ferdinand de Bourbon, duc de Castro, and Sixte Henri de Bourbon Parme, joined the suit and made the same demand relative to the title (but not to the arms). The lawsuit was rejected on 21 Dec 1988. The comte de Clermont appealed in March 1989 and lost.

Sometimes a "family crest" will appear online for various families. Every one that I have ever researched was created in the last half of the 20th century. I have only found three Canadian families which had legitimate "armoiries" (Brabant, Dompierre and Baillon).

Hope this helps...and happy new year.
