You can tell they were Catholic records :) All of the names were written in Latin. It makes it frustrating when they replace the SS with an X. I argued with someone for months that it didn't mean their names were really spelt the way they were in Church records. She didn't believe me until we got a copy of the birth certificate where everything was written in French.
