According to the "Planete Quebec" web-site, Montaigu was the origin of many immigrated (they say about 10,000 ancesters).
It was a major "baronnie" with powerful castle at the southern limits of Britany. Montaigu was several times subject to sieges, and was destroyed in the 16th century, restored, and later destroyed again during the Vendee war in 1793.
The church of Saint-Jean as been burned during that Vendee war.
