Terry .. I will attempt to answer your question. However, you have asked the most perplexing question for most Teter researchers. Where did Captain Samuel Gibson Teter come from and who were his parents. Unfortunately, I can not answer that question, but hopefully others can?

What I can tell you is that there is another Teter family, likely not related to Captain Sam. These are the descendants of Hans Jorg Dieter who emigrated from the Black Forest in Germany in 1727. His sons, George, Paul and Philip would settle in the 1760s in the Germany Valley of Pendelton County in what is now West Virginia. By the 1800s, many of the offspring of these 3 brothers would have moved 'out west' to such places as Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

There was another Jorg Dieter who arrived in Philadelphia in 1729 and settled in Northern Virginia near the Potamac River. Some have said this was Captain Sam's father. I have never seen any documents that attest to this, so I can not know for sure. However, it seems likely.

On the other hand, there are other Teter's who could have been Captain Sam's parents. My guess is Johann Michael Dieter, another son of Hans Jorg Dieter, who arrived with his parents in Philadelphia in 1727. While his younger brothers settled in Pendleton County, we know little of the older Johann Michael Dieter.

So, Captain Sam's lineage is well known from his marriage to Mary Doddridge to his settling in Ross County Ohio. There are several web sites devoted to him and his family. As for Hans Jorg Dieter and his family of Teter's, I have designed a web site that you may want to look at:

I do hope other Teter's help you with information on their branches of the family, as I too would like to know the answer to your question.
