Yes there was no such person named John George Teater. born 1739 who went to Kentucky that married Sarah Pearis. its a old legend created by Kelloge, where he combined 3 seperate people and made them into one person. It was just George W Teater. The George Teater that went to Kentucky has aheadstone that says 79 yrs old 1815. He appeared in Crabcreek 1768 with wife Sarah, next to Dunkers Bottom Richard Peariswife Rhoda and John Smith., He wasdocumented from the 1750s to1761 from 1761 to 1768. Its hard to pin him down. Samuel Gibson Teater also showed up 1768 in Bedford with Thomas Girty and married near the same time as George Teater.. I beieve both George and Samuel had a hunting camp and therefore were not counted as taxables during a period or theywere living in one of the Indian nations sending pelts furs ect for powder bullets flour coffee ect. Thomas Girty was the brother of Simon Girty the white Seneca war chief. Thomas Girty was resucued but not Simon. he was later to become a indian agent and reunited with Thomas Girty. So George Teater and Samuel Teater may have been living with the Seneca for all those years or they may have been with the Cherokee and Richard Pearis out of sight from civalization for 5 6 years,
What Kelloge did was combine the John George Teter born 1739 baptized by Rev Stover and the John Teater of Washington county and the George Teater of Washington county into one single person John George Teter, the son of a dunker Johhann George dieter arrived ship Allen so he combined 4 seperate people into one person. John George Teater its a myth now and never happened.
I believe theJohn George Teater who was born in 1739 maybehad died asbaby or the family moved back to Penn.
There was a Jacob Teeter and a George Tetnor 1744 still in Fredrick county . and a George Teator., I think George Teator and George Teator were the same person with different spellings on seperate notes. there was also a George Jeter a French Huguenot from Manakintown that lived up there as well. they also spelled thier name Teator Geator. One of them also migrated to the 96th about the same time as pearis he was William Teter..
There are 2 jacobs in Surry county during the 1750s Jacob Teeder Teder and JacobTeeter. also 2 George s George Teeder Tedder and George Teeter.. I think the George Teeter was the George Teter that removed back to Augusta with the Hinkle family 59 60 there about. The George Teeder and other Jacob Teeder were from Tyrrell and Beaufort NC prior to the 1750s they spelt the name Teterton and dropped the ton by the 1750s. i couldnt say exactly who was the John Teaters that appeared in Washington county by 1783 but he did have a son Jacob Teater who lived in Russell co and he did have a son named Jacob jr. my own theory is Jacob Teater of Fredrick co maoved to Surry NC he had a son George Teater and a son John Teater. George Teater appeared in the Granville militia about 1777. The George Teater of Granville might have settled in Mecklunburg and John Teaters in Washington co Virg.
or the John Teaters of Washington co may have come down from Maryland to Grennbrier then to Washington co.
You can notice the Ezekial Totten who lived with Neffs Teters Fiddlers Tetersand theTetter Teters all lived in Grennbrier Virg and maryland back and forth thru the 1780s to 1790s.
Who are the inlaws of your Jacob Teater? maybe trace thier migration pattern and see if one these Teaters is in the same group.
GeorgeW Teater and Samuel Gibson Teater most likley went with the Dobbs militia or they picked up by Pearis who travaled up and down between Maryland Penn to the Carolinas trying to raise a Cherokee army
Here are few bits and pieces fromdoddridges settlements and indian warfare.
Its said that after sometime of Braddocks defeat, the Bears having
feasted on the slain thought they had right to kill and eat everything
human who they met. A uncle of mine the name Capt Teter had like to
lost his life by one of them. In the woods he saw a old male winding
after him with a view to have sport of seeing the Bear run, he hid
himself behind a tree. When the Bear approached him he sprang out
and haloooed him. But cuffee instead of running off as he expected ,
jumped at him mouth wide open. my uncle stopped him by applying the
muzzule of his gun to his neck and firing it off. This killed him in a
instant, if his gun had snapped the hunter would of been torn to pieces
on the spot. After that he said he never undertook to play with a Bear,
Fur and Peltry were the money on the other side of the mountains, the
light snows ,Acting as Husbandmen they become uneasy at home, a
uncle of mine samuel teater occupied the same camp for years in
seccesion, They put thier fingers in thier mouth until warm, then above
the head, the side wihich becomes cold shows which way the wind
blows. A kill then skinned it,hung it up out of reach of the wolves
resumed the chase, at the campsite not a wind could touch him.
I will give the commands of Capt Teter[ Samuel Gibson Teater] our
Officer in his own words. He was in Braddocks defeat Grants defeat the
taking of Fort Pitt all the battles of which took place between the English
and French and Indians. he reminded us, in case the Indians should
succed we should expect no mercy everyman woman and child would
killed on the spot. We must make the best preperations we can,day
break we shall hear the crack of gunfire. Now say the Capt when you
run your bullets cut of the necks very close scrape them a them make a
little finer then those you commonly use ,well oiled. If the rifle chockes
in batte, one gun one man lost. Have the locks well oiled your flints
sharp so as not to misfire. He said to the women these yellow fellers
are good at setting fires to houses. you must fill every usefull bucket
with water these ugly fellows may set fires to our cabins in twenty
places at one time, now says he, let every man gather gather his axes
mattocks and hoes put them inside the door. indians may make a dash
at them with Tomahawks so cut them down witha axe when a gun
misfires.. Our women were frightened half to death I never saw a
merrier set of women. They went about thier work carrying water and
cutting bullets. The men without emotion of fear, during all of this no
sentinels were placed around our our Fort so confident was our Capt
that the attack would not be made before day break.
