Thomas Jefferson Thames' Ancestry (1792 NC to 1837 GA)
I have in my possession a copy of a family memoir written by a grandson of Thomas Jefferson Thames of Crawford County, GA.I am sharing this with the list both to spread the information contained there and in the hopes that it may trigger some new information from someone. If anyone can offer any further information that supports or disproves the memoirs I would love to hear from them.Cheryl
First let me give you some background on the author of these memoirs. William Harmon Thames, called Harmon, was born in Crawford County, GA Jan. 27, 1876 and died Feb. 20, 1955.He was the second son born to William Riley Thames (1837-1909) and his wife Permelia Ann Hartley.William Riley Thames was the youngest son of Thomas Jefferson Thames (born NC 1792, died 1837 Crawford County GA) and his wife Rebecca Ray (1799-1884).
Memoirs of William Harmon Thames (1876 to 1955)
Dated Crawford County, GA August 25, 1949 - February 28, 1952
According to page 11 of Harmon's memoirs, Thomas Jefferson Thames (born 1792) traveled to Georgia from North Carolina with his father, Thomas Thames (born about 1765).Thomas Thames also had two other sons that traveled to Georgia with him.The memoirs state that Thomas Thames (the elder one) was also accompanied to Georgia by his brother, but the brother's name is not stated.Harmon's written words are "These two brothers were one of them was my Great Grandfather Thomas, the other a brother...".
Harmon states in the memoirs that "my grandfather Thomas was born in 1797".Harmon is referring to Thomas Jefferson Thames who was actually born in 1792, so Harmon is a little off on that date.
Harmon goes on to say that his information is based partially on his own memory, some on Bible records, some from other family members and that it "may not be just to date correct, but so very nearly so", indicating he knew he was possibly off on some dates.
Another clue offered by Harmon's memoirs states "According to information I pick up here and there, there is a number of Thame's in Alabama and Texas.I presume it is descendents from my Grandfather's brother that continued his journey on West."
The memoirs go on to identify the children of Thomas Jefferson Thames and Rebecca Ray and give the names of their spouses and children.Harmon states that his father (William Riley Thames) and "his father's brothers were all carpenters and shop workers. My Uncle George was a wagon maker." (Refers to my direct ancestor, George Washington Thames).
Much of the first 10 pages of the memoirs discuss William Harmon Thames' childhood and education and later describe his marriage, work & children. They are very interesting, but only the last 4 pages give any genealogical clues into the ancestry of Thomas Jefferson Thames.
The memoirs of William Harmon Thames confirm my Georgia research and research that has been done in NC. Thomas Jefferson Thames was born in NC 1792 and was the son of Thomas Thames of NC who was born in about 1765. Thomas Thames born 1765 was the son of Joseph and Martha Newberry Thames. My Georgia research and the research from NC further shows that the brother who came to Georgia with Thomas was Samuel Thames born about 1770.
