These would not be my line as we were west of the Rhineland; I have run across this Hesse-Darmstadt bunch on line at Roots web and world connect and various spots. I have heard the story about the Tiga but there are lots of stories about the name. There was also a medieval Matthias II, of HUngary, and THEISS is a diminuative of Matthias. My line supposedly came from the S of France circa 1400 and migrated into the S R Pfalz.
