hello ann,tks for the post,i am slowly putting the edward thew b 1807 family together. my latest line up is as follows. edward,b1807,[head]hannah,1813[wife]thomas,1832,william,1836,john,1837,elizabeth,1839,luke,1841,phoebe,1845,hannah,1847,isabella,1852,edward,1856,and they lived in durham city.there were also other thew families in the city at that time, my great grandmother was isabella who had a son arthur william thew.aw thew married mary elizabeth wandless in elvet 1907 and had a large family the youngest of which was my mother beatrice thew who has just turned 89,aw thew was a rsm in the dli and served in s,africa, india, wwi [medals in dli museum].his first grandson ,alan, migrated to oz in 1957. luke 1841 never married, elizabeth was an invalid and did not marry,edward,1856 had 3 children from his first marriage, thomas,[d 1918 germany]luke and elizabeth . the 1871 census shows edward,1807 and the younger members of his family living in church st,elvet not far from john and caroline thew in pit row ..they must all have worked at the elvet pit and pit row was close..part of durham university sits on the site of the old pit.my grandfather worked in this pit at 14 but then enlisted 1896 or so.. its amazing how the same christian names occur in the thews, especially luke. nothing so far to add to thomas 1832,he left england between the 1861 census and the next sighting is johns arrival in oz in 1876. i intend to dig deeper soon.
