Hello Carolyn, Its thanks to all these messages and the early work of Alan Thew and Keith Duffin that I am beginning to get a better understanding of the Thew family in County Durham.

The Australian connections are of particular interest to me and so far they are -
George Thew [1777] b Tanfield. to AUST AG CO. NSW
Thomas Thew [1832] to AUST sometime after UK imprisonment
in 1854.
John Thew [1836] to NSW [1876] with wife Caroline and family.

Also more recently Alan Thew who migrated to NSW in 1956,and who is from the same line as me,Thomas Thew [1788
] b Tanfield.

This Thomas Thew [1788] was mentioned earlier by Keith Duffin and who was the victim of an assault in Gateshead,in Oct 1831 [Times archives] The three persons
convicted of the attempted murder were transported after the trial in Aug 1832.and were named as
William and Elizabeth Parkin,Thomas Varty.
The Times review of the Durham court case suggests that they had a dispute with Thomas Thew concerning union membership.Isabella Thew his wife gave evidence at the trial.

This Thomas Thew [1788] was the g/father of Thomas Thew [1832] who went to trial at Durham Court in Feb 1854 and was imprisoned. i have no idea yet what he had done but i will find out soon. It is possible that this imprisonment was linked to his disappearance from Co Durham and his arrival in NSW in 1863.

This line of Thomas Thew [1788 and 1832] could well have been in communication with the earlier migrant George Thew.
[theory only]

Its strange to think that this Australian line of Thews
were in France {WW1] the same time as members of the Durham Light Infantry [my g/father A.W.Thew]

Finally Carolyn,do you have any more on the 'Germany'
reference to William Thew in you message.

hope ive not bored you ,moss
