My father and I traveled to Saxony a little over a year ago and attempted to reestablish contact. His grandmother, Ida Camilla Thieme, came over at the end of the 19th century, and she went back to Germany several times. Her latest return visits were right before WWII.
Dad's mother told him that she was born in the tiny town of Lossnitz, in the erzgebirge. We could not find anyone there who knew her or the records of her birth. It was a beautiful town, though, and we had a wonderful time.
