This is for all the Thistlethwaite's out there.
The Thistle name migrated from the Channel Islands in the late 15th century to the Northern part England.
In the late 16th century the name was modified to
Thistlethwayte (thwaite) meaning the clearing where the Thislte family settled in Cumberland. Alexander Thistlethwaite name appear in North England in 1577
It was common in England back then to add TON, WOOD, THWAITE
to many Surname's.
Thistleton ...town where the Thistle family lived.
Thistlethwaite ...the clearing where the Thistle family lived.15th century
Thistlewood..the woods where the Thistle family
lived.16th century.
Now back to Alexander Thistlethawaite his family through the generations married into several notable families.
Alexander Married Cicilia daughter to Sir Anthony Hungerford
His son Alexander married Dorothy daughter of Sir Edward
Penruddock Knight of Compton Chamberland.
Francis Thistletwaite married Mary daughter of Major Robert Pelham. Here the the big one where the Thistletwhaite's inherit the Coat of Arms.
Alexander's son Francis married Mary daughter of Sir Whithed
It was through a most extraordinry will.Whithed willed his land and personal property to the Parliament of Great Britton for the use of the poor, hunger, naked strangers,sick wounded, strangers and prisoners to the end of the world. This singular depostion how ever was set aside and the estate was past on to Francis Thistlethwaite
who married Mary Whithed daughter of Sir Whithed he died without heir and the Coat of Arms was past on to Francis
and it remains in the family ever since.
