I'm trying to help my grandfather trace back his roots and possibly find living distant relative of his. Being he is the only living Thoms in our immediate family, little is known of his family history. Here's what he knows:
His grandfather, William Thoms came to the U.S. (Seattle, WA) in the late 1870's with his wife Matilda Terrace Thoms and his three kids, Alex, Elizabeth and Robert.
My grandfather knows that William Thoms had four brothers. One brother, Jim, worked for the post office, I think in Scotland. He then went to Victoria, South Africa to work in the Postal Service. We believe he was the Post General there. Elizabeth, noted above, used to keep contact with two of Jim's sons in South Africa. They became citrus farmers there.
Charles, a second brother, came to the U.S. to live, but thought everything moved too quickly here. He went back to Scotland. A third brother went down with a whaling ship. The fourth brother, even less information is know. Not even a name.
I figure the best chance of finding decendents of this branch would be from Jim Thoms' family in South Africa.
Please let me know if you have any information.
