Hello John:I am researching my THORNBOROUGH family of Scotland, Lancashire and Devonshire. The only place of certainty among these is Devonshire. My John Thornborough was born c1810 parents unknown. He joined the Royal Navy in 1829 and during his term from 1829 through 1850 he listed his place of birth as Ulverston, Lancashire, with one exception - Glasgow, Scotland. When he went onto continuous service in 1850 through 1861 (December) he listed his place of birth as Dumfries, Scotland. As of this date I have not located him in either places, but am still searching.John married Jane Hamilton in 1834 in Plymouth Charles, Devonshire and they had six children, five survived childhood.Jane died in 1860 at Stoke Dameral, Devon in 1860 and John is last found in 1861 on the Census of East Stonehouse, Devon, listed as a retired Greenwich Pensioner, born Dumfries, Scotland. On daughter Jane's marriage certificate in 1863 John is listed as a Petty Officer, so I am assuming he went back into the Navy.No death record for him can be found, nor can any further record of his time in the Royal Navy be located.Pension records show that he transferred his pension payments to the Preston, Lancashire office from Devonshire in 1861/1862, indicating a move as pension payments had to be collected in person. Unfortunately pension records stop in 1862 and so no furtherinformation is available from that source. Are you familiar with this John or his family? His discharge papers have an oblique reference to Thomas and Agnes, no surname and no relationship given.
Thanks for your time.I look forward to your response.
Glenys
