Robert was born, 18 Dec 1847, second of eight children of Oliver Perry and Mary (Magill) Thoroughman.Oliver P. was a miner at St. Joseph, MO, where he left for Denver, CO, in 1862, traveling overland to Virginia City, MT. becoming one of the pioneer prospectors and miners of the territory.For eight years he was a Lewis and Clark county commissioner.Oliver P. was born in Kentucky and died in Montana in 1887, 66 years old. Mary was born in South Carolina and died in Montana in 1884, age 63 years old.
Robert Perry Thoroughman attended schools in St. Joseph, MO, and Denver, CO. In 1862, he helped his father drive a herd of cattle to Denver, and in 1863 rode the range, and for six months was a teamster. In 1865 he drove overland to Helena, MT, with a team of mules, where he engaged in mining.In 1867, he went to Flat Creek, Lewis & Clark county, and ran a roadhouse. He invested in cattle and ran them on the range in Prickley Pear Valley until Jul 1880, when he drove his herd to Chestnut Valley for better pasturage.He was successful in the cattle business and owned 1,120 acres of fine ranch land.In 1917 he sold his cattle and retired.He was elected on the Democratic ticket and served one term on the Seventh State Assembly, and was deputy assessor for 7+ years.
On 23 Mar 1870, Robert married Miss Anna E. Bickett, of Helena, MT, a native of Missouri.Thoroughman children: Joseph, Anna (deceased wife of Edwin Newlan).
