Thurmond/Thurman , white and black
Some Thurmond ancestors spelled it Thurman and some siblings used different spellings, thus many Thurmonds and Thurmans are descended form the same parents, so many Thurmonds and Thurmans are actually cousins . At one time I thought that I was not related to anyone named Thurman until I found out otherwise. I have a question. I know that many of the freed slaves adopted their master's surname after the civil war thus there are many black Thurmond/Thurman families in the U.S. now. Can one assume that all Thurmond or Thurman Families prior the civil war were white?
