I have also been researching the Thurrott name. I have heard rumors of a French connection but have no evidence of it. I believe that James Thorrat B:1874 in Dumfries, Scotland was the son of John and Isabel Heylen who were married in Dumfries, Scotland on March 15, 1781 (IGI # 1067960).
James migrated to Canada with his three Scotish born children abt. 1828 and aquired a 200 acre land grant in So. Branch, Kent County in April 1831. The 1861 Weldford Parish census places James (age 77) living on a farm with the Holder family.
You can e-mail me if you need any further details.
