Starting Sept. 5, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum
message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles
will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will
no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.
This is a follow-up on R.A. Tibbets of Gloucester. That information is engraved on a telescope built between 1840 and 1870. I assumed he was the original owner. I since determined he was Robert Abbot Tibbets, a retailer of nautical equipment, watches/clocks, jewelry and silver. His shop was at 117 Front Street, since renamed Main Street, which I visited. The storefront was just modernized. The owner of an antique photograph store down the street confirmed that a similar store, but owned by a different family, was at that location until a few years ago. I found additional information, including two rough scans of ads Tibbets placed in the Essex County Register, and census records of 1850, 1870 and 1880.
