John:
I believe your great-grandfather, Earl Tiffany, was a second or third cousin of my grandmother,Anna Tiffany, and if he was her cousin Earl, none of this branch of the Tiffanies lived in Springfield, Ohio until the 1870s or 1880s.I have the following quotation from: THE NEW JERSEY BRANCH OF THE HARRIS FAMILY, Madison WI,1888, pp. 240-242.
"Abigail Ross, daughter of Aaron and Sarah Harris Ross, was born in Mercer County, Pa; married Nathan Tiffany in 1840, by whom she had nine children." --- "George (Tiffany), born April 1, 1848"George was their third child.Farther in the same section:
"George Tiffany, son of Nathan and Abigail (Ross) Tiffany, was born in Pennsylvania; married Ella Neal, by whom he had three children: Earl, Ollo, and Minnie. He is a machinist, and resides in Springfield, Ohio, at present writing, 1886".
I think Earl might have been your great-grandfather and he was either a child or a very young man in 1886.
I have quite a bit of material on this branch of the Tiffanys and I've been working on them for several years. This branch of the Tiffany family lived in Connecticut until roughly 1800, when they moved to upstate New York.About 1818 most of the family moved on to Crawford County, Pennsylvania and they later spread out to Erie, Mercer, and Lawrence Counties in Pennsylvania.I call this branch the
"Western Pennsylvania Tiffanys";they weren't close relations to the Tiffanys living around Brooklyn or Harford, Pennsylvania; but most of the Tiffany families found in the western part of Pennsylvania in 1850 were descndants of Nathan Tiffany who was born in Ashford, Connecticut on May 4, 1733, and Nathan Tiffany was a descendant of Humphrey Tiffany's son Thomas. This is a fairly obscure branch of the Tiffany family simply because no one else has done any research on them in recent years and most of the original documents on them consist of deeds and books on the families that they married into.If you would like more information on this family, send me an e-mail.Best Wishes, Warren Colligan.
