Hi,

I too, am very interested in this family. I will tell you what I have and perhaps I can help you and you in turn will be able to clarify some things for me.

I have a James H. Tilghman marrying a Caroline Tolbert in McLean County, Illinois on May 21, 1863.

On the 1870 census I find the following:

Randolph, McLean, Illinois
#19-20
Tilghman, Caroline age 42 born in Virginia
Tilghman, Arthur L. age 5 born in Illinois
Tilghman Charles W. age 2 born in Illinois
Tolbert, Milton age 22 farmer 10,000/1565 born in Indiana
Tolbert Newton Z.(?) age 20 on farm born in Indiana
Tolbert Henry age 18 on farm born in Illinois

No mention of James H. Tilghman

1880 census Randolph Township, McLean, Illinois
page 147 A
Tolbert, Caroline age 52 D (DIVORCED) born in Virginia father: Virginia mother: Virginia
Tilghman, Arthur L. age 14 son born in Illinois father: Michigan mother: virginia
Tilghman, Charles age 11 son born in Illinois father: Michigan mother: Virginia

Now there is another marriage record possibly for the same James H. Tilghman. That is to a descendent of mine: Nancy E. Pitt (Pitts is the actual name). They were married in Champaign County (next door to McLean County) Illinois on March 4, 1872.

I think I found Nancy in the 1880 census of DeWitt County only the extractor had her last name as Lilyhouse. The writing is hard to decipher and I can see how he/she came up with Lilyhouse. But the birth places of herself, her father and mother match with her parents that I have for her.

I have the census of her--living with W. J. Rutledge and family in DeWitt County---as Elizabeth Tilghman. She also has a son Otis Tilghman.

Now I have not been able to find anything on her, Otis, James H. Tilghman or any of the others that I mention in the following paragraph:

In the marriage records there is Frank E. Tilghman marrying a Elma Bogurif in Champaign County, in 1878. I do not find them on the 1880 census any place. A Frank E. Tilghman is also shown again (do not know if same man) on the Illinois marriage records and marrying a Ellen Simmons in Vermilion County, Illinois in 1885. I do not find record of them

There is a Charles M. Tilghman marrying a Mary Kinsey. I do not find record of them. They marrying in 1868 in McLean.

On the McLean County Probate Record Index 1834-1900 it has a Arthur L. Tilghman dates: 1887-1888 vol: x page 525
Arthur L. Tilghman dates: 1888-1891 vol: x pages 24, 125, 401, 531, 535

I have not looked into these records.

It looks like anyone with the Tilghman name disappeared from Illinois as well as the rest of the country. Very strange. Just no paper trail on them that I can find on the internet anyway.

If you have any information on the Tilghman's I would be so grateful if you could share that with me.

Thanks, Deanna
