First I would like to thank you Mr. Souder, for your kind offer to do look ups in your book. It is a very generous gesture, and I'm sure it will help a great many Tilghman researchers.

My question is regarding Christopher Tilghman, born 20 April 1592 in Kent, England, and died in James City, VA. He married Lady Ruth Blount (sometimes listed as Ruth Devonshire) on 9 May 1635. She was born circa 1600 in Kent, England and died circa 1690 in Maryland.

Ruth was the daughter of Charles Blount, 1st Earl of Devonshire and his mistress, Lady Penelope Devereaux, wife of Robert Rich, Earl of Warwick. Charles and Penelope had several children together, and although they were finally married in 1605, their children were never legitimated. Therefore, when Charles Blount died, he was not considered to have any legitimate children, and his title became extinct.

Christopher Tilghman is reported to be the son of another Christopher Tilghman and Anne Pandreth Saunders.

Christopher and Ruth are my 9th great-grandparents, and I currently have 3 sons listed for them; Roger, Gideon and John Tilghman. I am also related to the Devereaux family through several other branches.

Would you please post any information you have on Christopher and Ruth, their children, and Christopher's parents? I would be very grateful to find out more about this couple.

Kindest regards,
Isabelle Zimmer
