John Tilley got a patent of land in Washington Co., AR in 1838; Elisha Tilley got a patent of land in Washington Co., AR in 1848.

Notice that the older John Tilly here doesn't have any land in the census but could have sold what he got in 1838. However, the younger John does show considerable land and he could be the one who got the patent in 1838. Elisha Tilley in the census appears likely to be the one who got the patent in 1848. Edmond also has some bit of land. Don't know if he purchased it or if gotten by patent.

Your posting shows a transaction in 1834 witnessed by John Tilley along with John Barns.

The older John here is living so close to Reuben and Reuben appears to name his first child John so I would at least suspect that Reuben could be John's son.

However, Edmond, Elisha, and the younger John all are living near each other and look like they could be brothers. The oldest of all of these Tilleys is John born in VA about 1772, the younger kids all born in TN.

Now, it was the name Elisha along with the older John that caught my eye because of the same names I found in Warren Co., TN records.

1805 and 1812 Tax list has John Tilley in Warren Co., TN

Plat for John Tilley's 60 acres of land surveyed 9 July 1825 for John Tilley; entry bearing date 19 June 1824, #130. Creek of Collins River; adj. Edmund McMahan, Wm. North, John Tilley. ELISHA TILLY and JOHN TILLY, chain carriers. [frequently young boys would be chain carriers on these surveys]

Warranty Deed Book F, p. 82
5 Oct 1826 Robert Puckett sold to John Tilley (both of Warren Co., TN), for $605, six negroes: woman Amy about 30 years old; Lucy about 9; William about 8; Alford about 6; Moses about 4; Henry about 1. Witnesses: George R. Smart and Enos Halbert.

Warranty Deed Book F, p. 363
4 Apr 1829 George R. Smartt of Warren Co., TN sold to Wm. C. Smart of Warren Co., TN, for $1500, 180 acres on S. Bank of Borrin [Barren?] fork of Collins River, 150 acres of which was divided to said G. R. Smart by John Millender the balance by Thos.Hopkins, also a certain tract in Warren Co. on Hickory Creek adj. John Tilley and James McKaig (McCaig)
[My note: John Millender and a John Tilley were distributees of the estate of Edmond Tilley who died in 1800 in Wilkes Co., NC. John Millender appeared to be husband of a Edmond's daughter Elizabeth. Could this John Tilley and John Millender be the son and son-in-law of Edmond Tilley who died in 1800 Wilkes Co., NC?]

Warranty Deed Book F, p. 365
3 Oct 1829 John Tilly of Warren Co., TN to W. C. Smartt, for $200, sold a parcel in Warren Co. adj....now John Banners NE corner entry originally made in name of John Millender and sold to G. R. Smart [who sold] to W. C. Smartt, 62 acres in all part of tract originally granted Godfrey Isball and by him conveyed to John Tilly. Signed John Tilly. Witnesses: G. R. Smart, William Smart.

Warranty Deed Book G, p. 290-292
28 Sept 1830 John Tilley and William North of Warren Co., TN sold approx. 100 acres to John Evans for $400. Adj. John Millenders line. Surveyed 16 Dec 1807 and granted by State of TN to John Tilley, grant #888, 100 acres; W corner of Edmon McMarhan tract, line Wm. Norths corner of Tilley tract; conditional line said Tilley and Thomas Paris, N boundry of another tract and said Tilley. Granted John Tilley by State of TN, No. 5530, 56 acres. Signed John Tilly, William North. Witnesses: Nimrod Dodson, A. Evans Jr.

Slave schedule for 1850 in Washington Co., AR shows John Tilley and Ed Tilley in Cane Hill Twp had slaves. John Tilley in Marshill Twp also had slaves.

But, what I find particularly interesting are the names Elisha and John Tilley in Washington Co. and they appear to be associated with John Tilley. Could the Washington Co., AR Tilleys be the ones who were in Warren Co., TN earlier.

1820 Census of Warren Co., TN has the following household:
p. 1
John Tilley
2 M Under 10
3 M 10-16
1 M 16-18
2 M 16-26
1 M 26-45 [born ca 1776-1794]
2 F 16-26
1 F 26-45

1830 Census, Warren Co., TN
p. 336
#10 John Tilly
1 M 15-20
2 M 20-30
1 M 50-60
2 F 10-15
1 F 15-20
1 F 50-60
6 slaves
[This appears to be the John Tilley who bought the six slaves in 1826]

#21 was John Barns household

1840 AIS index showed no Tilly, Tilley, Telly, Telley in Warren Co., TN. Had they left?

1840 Census, Washington Co., AR
p. 263
#1 Anselor? Barnes
#4 Elisha Tilley
3 M 30-40
No females
4 slaves

#12 John Tilley
1 M 5-10
1 M 15-20
2 M 20-30
1 M 60-70
1 F U 5
1 F 20-30
1 F 60-70
17 slaves

The ages for this 60-70 year old John and probable wife are compatible with the John and Martha each age 78 in 1850. And, they are compatible with those for the John in 1820-1830 in Warren Co., TN. Elisha appears to clearly be the same one in 1840 and 1850. Living with Elisha could be Edmond since they were living together in 1850. Another brother could be with him or maybe the laborer who was with them in 1850.

If the John Tilley in Warren Co., TN was the son of the Edmond Tilley who died in 1800 in Wilkes Co., TN, it would be understandable that he would name a son Edmond.

I emphasize that this is a working hypothesis and should not be taken as Gospel but might suggest some clues for further research and verification.
