I don't know if I can help you or not but there are some Caldwell's in my family. my ggrand father John Calvin Tilley was married to Sarah Elizabeth Rutherford their grand son by ( John Andrew Tilley ) who's son Francis Monroe Tilley married Phoebe Sturgill, now her parents were ? Caldwell and her mother was Phoebe Sturgill,this Phoebe did not marry Caldwell because he returned home from the civil war and had been severly wounded and was not to recover from his wounds, she also was ill from TB, so she did marry a man named Andrew Hash who wanted to take care of her to her dying day and she agreed to the wedding, giving her daughter her maiden name of Sturgill, this all happened in Ashe County,NC. were your lead might begin, I could not find the names you mentioned, Sarah Jand or Mary Candice in my data base related to James Harrison Caudill, now you should know that Caudill,Caldwell,have been the same people with diffrent spelling in the census so you should look at all variations and not dismiss them.hope this gives you a new avenue to look. good luck,happy bone diggin.Carl Tilley.papybear@aol.com
