Transcription of artical that appeared in paper at time of Amers death in 1932. PP is for paragraph.
One of the oldest and most beloved citizens of Stokes Co NC, Amer J Tilley of Lawsonville died at his home 3 Mar 1932 following an illness of five weeks. He was one of the most widely known Confederate veterans and a long and useful life had been his in it's span of ninety-two years. PP Adjuntant Tilley was born 7/7/1839 the son of Aaron and Lockey Jaskson Tilley. PP He enlisted in the army of the Confederacy as a young man in 1861 in Company H 22nd Regiment NC troops, in Captain Scales Company. PP He was wounded in a sever battle near Manassas Junction Aug 29th by a screw out of a bomb shell whick cut the end of the hip bone off, it weighting 4 ounces, which is still in the familys possession. He was also bady wounded in left leg, and was sent to the hospital for several months. He never was in any more battles. When he got able he helped nurse the sick and wounded. PP He married 4/12/1866 to Miss Harriet Hall of a prominent family of Stokes Co. He was a farmer and a resident of Stokes Co all his life. PP He was a great lover of the Primitive Baptist Church. PP He attended the Confederate reunions when he was able to go, and was actively interested in what ever concerened his confederate comrades. He was laid to rest in his Confederate uniform of which he was so proud. PP In his passing the community has lost one of it's best citizens, and his family a devoted husband and father. He was surrived by his widow, one daughter and a son. PP Funeral services were conducted from the home and he was laid to rest in the Family cemetary.
