From "The State" Newspaper, Wednesday, October 23, 1901 DEATH OF MRS. POPE - ONE OF COLUMBIA'S OLDEST RESIDENTS HAS PASSED AWAY Last night, about 10 o'clock, Mrs. Martha Pope died at the residence of her son, Mr. Winfield Scott Pope, on North Main Street. She was a good mother in Israel and will be missed by many friends. She was one of the oldest residents of Columbia. Mrs. Pope was born in this county 84 years ago, her maiden name being Martha Tilley. She married the late Nathaniel Pope, esteemed citizen of this county. Three children survive, Mssrs. W. S. and Tom Clingman Pope and Mrs. W. D. Starling. She has great grandchildren. Mrs. Pope was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of this city. The funeral will be conducted at the home of Mr. W. S. Pope at 4 o'clock this afternoon and the interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery. From "The State" Newspaper, Thursday, October 24, 1901 FUNERAL OF MRS. POPE Yesterday afternoon, a number of the friends of the late Mrs. Martha Pope gathered at the home of Mr. W. S. Pope and there paid the last tribute of respect to the elderly and good woman who has left a lasting impress upon this community. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. C. Lindsay, D.D. The pallbearers were Dr. J. M. Quattlebaum, Mr. W. T. Hill, Mr. W. H. Lyles, Mr. George King, Mr. C. A. Douglas and Mr. T. H. Harper. The remains were interred at Elmwood Cemetery.
